VILLAGE GROUP VOTES
TRANSPORTATION UPGRADES
Reconfiguring local roads in, through and out of
Main Street/Buzzards Bay, establishing a boat basin
in the Cape Cod Canal and encouraging year-round tourist
and dinner trains transiting the Canal to Main Street,
were three of the major transportation recommendations
adopted today, by the Board of Directors of the Buzzards
Bay Village Association, Inc., now doing business as
the Buzzards Bay Vitalization Association.
These recommendations along with others are
contained in "Buzzards Bay Village Comprehensive Transportation
Plan", commissioned by the Buzzards Bay Vitalization
Association. It was prepared by Wesley Ewell, local
planning consultant of Pocasset in conjunction with
the Maguire Group Inc. of Providence, Rhode Island.
Specifically, the plan calls for the widening of Route
25 access ramps and bringing them straight to a traffic
light at Main Street/Scenic Highway; reconfiguring
Memorial and Belmont Circles; reducing the by-pass
to two travel lanes; and constructing a bicycle path
the length of the by-pass with a pedestrian underpass
crossing the Route 25 ramp,
It also calls for a pleasure boat basin, in the vicinity
of the railroad bridge, in the Cape Cod Canal making
Main Street, Buzzards Bay accessible to the thousand
of boaters who now pass through the canal on their
way to somewhere else.
Tourist trains, according to the report, including
dinner trains, scenic tours and special event trains
would draw visitors to the Main Street/Buzzards Bay
area year-round.
Other transportation improvements adopted by the BBVA
directors include:
•Extending Main Street Sidewalks
improvements to Belmont Circle
•Build a commuter parking
lot and inter-city bus stop/station in Belmont Circle
•Encourage the State Highway Department to begin
Cohasset Narrows Bridge replacement
•Support and promote
OWL bus and B-Bus Services between Bourne villages
and other Uppper Cape Communities.
•Attract a canal
tour boat to Buzzards Bay Improve signage for bicycles
directing them to safe routes
•Work with developers
in building parking facilities Build a ride-share
parking lot at the by-pass.
The plan will now be pretested with various groups
across the town, the upper Cape and Cape Cod Commission.
It will be presented to the Bourne Board of Selectmen
later this month after a detailed discussion by the
Board's Transportation Advisory Committee.
The transportation plan is one of the many aspects
of the Buzzards Bay Vitalization Association's charge
to convert Main Street/Buzzards Bay area into a contemporary
downtown community reflecting the best in architecture,
land use, environmental compatibility and state-of-the-art
telecommunications and transportation infrastructure
in meeting residents, housing, job creation, tourists,
businesses and investor needs and interests.
