Quintal Property Re-use Update!
The proposed reuse of the Quintal Property in Butler Circle
is heading for court. Proponents of including a gas station,
along with a convenience store and donut shop on the site,
have filed suit in the Barnstable County Superior Court
appealing the recent decision of the Bourne Board of Selectmen
denying them a permit to install gas pumps.
They, however, continue to pursue a Planning Board permit
to build the other two facilities. The Board has granted
them until January 13, 2005 to address several safety concerns.
Proponents agreed to the delay, and have offered to work
closely with town and community people to attemtp to resolve
the issues.
Speculation has it that if the Planning Board reject the
revised plan, proponents will seek to develop a steak house,
which some suspect, will garner the approval of the Planning
Board.
The BBVA is closely monitoring developments and will report,
timely and appropriate.
BBVA Issues "Statement of Concern" on the Proposed
Re-Use of Quintal Property
The Executive Committee of the Buzzards Bay Village Association
(BBVA) has issued a "Statement of Concern" regarding
the proposed reuse of the Quintal property on Scenic Highway,
Buzzards Bay. The plan calls for a gas station, a donut
shop and a convenience store to replace an existing restauarant.
The BBVA believes that Main Street, between the Cohasset
Narrows Bridge and the Bourne Bridge, has enough, if not
too many, gas pumps/stations, donut shops or fast food outlets
and convenience stores and to allow further additions would
emphasize, to potential investors, current land owners,
merchants and residents that these types of commercial activities
are the only viable and supportable commercial activities
on Main Street.
Should the proposed reuse plan be approved, Main Street/Buzzards
Bay from the Memorial Circle to the Bourne Bridge - a distance
of over a mile - could result in up to 8 gas stations, up
to 4 convenience stores and up to 4 donut/fast food outlets,
mostly concentrated in the Belmont Circle area!
Furthermore, the BBVA wishes to reiterate its strong support
for the the international architectural design competition,
now underway, as a critical first step toward enhancing
the area by making it a more visible and viable area for
a number of commercial, transportation, historial, governmental,
housing, social and tourism related activities."
